OPERATION GUATEMALA! As a parish, we are being asked this year to prayerfully (and financially, if possible) support our diocesan mission in Guatemala. The Mission, founded in 1964 by our Diocese, is located 100 miles northwest of Guatemala City and serves nearly 40 communities through the Sacraments, parish ministry, La Asuncion School, Clinica Maxena, the Angel Fund, The Widows’ Weaving project, the Microfinance project, and the Food Assistance program.
Medical needs, for conditions and illnesses we seldom deal with here, are huge. Clinica Maxena, which provides medical, dental and prenatal care to the Guatemalans, has devoted doctors and nurses, but much financial support is needed to cover equipment, medications and supplies. The government of Guatemala provides a free education for children through grade 6. Those who cannot afford to pay for more schooling after Grade 6 will begin working, probably doing manual labor. The cost to attend La Asuncion School is around $300 per student for the school year (January-October).
SO WHAT CAN OUR PARISH DO??? · Sponsor a student’s education at La Asuncion School for $25 a month · Donate to the Angel Fund for those who cannot pay for the medical treatment. · Give to the Food Assistance program. · Donate to the microfinance program. · PRAY, PRAY, AND PRAY…for the Guatemalans and those who staff the Mission and care for them. Secure online gifts can be made at www.diocesehelena.org/offices/guatemala.html or contact the Diocesan office, 442-5820 or email Mark Frei or Jenny Stark (the administrative assistant) at jstark@diocesehelena.org
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT—LENT CALLS US TO A TIME OF PRAYER AND ALMSGIVING—AND THE GUATEMALA MISSION IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR BOTH!
